Plastic lenses are the most common type of lenses. Manufactured exclusively by PPG, the patented CR-39 monomer revolutionized the optical industry as the first plastic lens material when it was introduced in 1945. Plastic lenses offer good optical clarity, are lightweight, more shatter resistant than glass, and are the most economical lens. The disadvantages of plastic lenses are that they require a scratch resistant coating for added durability and also require a special treatment to provide 100% Ultra Violet protection.
